An autobiography told with all the charm of a man who was noted in his lifetime as a raconteur. As an 18 year old midshipman he took part in the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882, as a volunteer carrying dispatches to an isolated fort in the desert was captured by rebals, placed in prision in Cairo, Queen Victoria asked for prayers to be said for him, on the capture of the capital Sir Garnet Wolseley dispatched the words “Midshipman de Chair safe”. His eventful career led him into association and frequent conflict with the First Sea Lord, Winston Churchill and later to the command of the famous Tenth Cruiser Squadron, which blockaded Germany from the Orkneys to the Arctic. |
