Description |
1st ED. 207pp. 23 b/w plates & 1 map. good cond. dj fair, chipped on edges. The story of the Dutch ship, the Batavia which ran aground off the coast of Western Australia in 1629. The crew and passengers escaped to tiny islands near the wreck but in the days which followed one of the bloodiest mutinies ever recorded took the lives of 125 men, women and children. An expedition headed by the author dived on the wreck, explored the islands, and made further discoveries - skeletons, weapons, gold - which enabled him to corroborate, at last, the Batavia story. |
