1st pb ED. 224pp. many b/w & col plates. good cond. The story of the loss of the Royal Charter which sank in 1859 off the coast of Anglesey in a Force 12 gale. It was a veritable treasure ship as it was returning from Australia loaded with more than £375,000 in gold and miners with their families from the gold fields with money bags bulging. Although much of the gold had been recovered in the weeks after the disaster, in the 1970’s she begn to attract the attention of salvage operators and more gold and personal possessions have been recovered. |
